Plate 01 — The tailor's hands

The cutting room is silent until eleven. Then the radio goes on and nobody turns it off until the last fitting.

Plate 02 — The cutting table

Three days

Monsieur Aubert has cut cloth in the same room since 1984. He let me stay on one condition: no flash, and never in the way of the scissors.

So I worked with the window and a long lens, and photographed hands more than faces. Hands tell you how long someone has done this.

Plate 03 — Chalk

“A good jacket takes forty hours. A good tailor takes forty years.”

— Inès Moreau

Plate 06 — Pins

Notes

Shot on a Contax G2 with a 90mm lens, Kodak Portra 800, developed and printed in Paris.
