Plate 01 — The steam room

The steam never leaves the room. It softens every edge, so the tiles look painted and the copper looks like velvet.

One afternoon

The hammam closes to the public on Tuesday afternoons. The keeper let us in with a kettle of mint tea and a request to leave the soap where it was.

No people, only things: towels, bowls, a copper basin, black soap. We waited for the steam to thin before every frame.

Shot on a Hasselblad 500C/M with an 80mm lens and extension tubes, Kodak Portra 160, developed in Paris.
